The Virtue of Hope (December)
This month we celebrate the virtue of hope, one of the theological virtues listed in 1 Corinthians 13. Hope is very much a spiritual virtue. Hope is the theological virtue by which we place our trust in Christ’s promises and rely not on our own strength alone, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Hope is strongly associated with the Advent Season: the readings from the Hebrew Scriptures and the early Gospels look forward in hope to the coming of Christ.
Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations
The Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations state that the student is expected to become a discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living. OCGE1 Reverence is a particularly important quality in this sacred season. We pray and reflect upon the many ways we come to understand God’s presence in our lives during this month.
Advent
We begin our Church’s liturgical year on Sunday, December 3rd an, the first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of Year B in the liturgical cycle. Advent is a time of patient and prayerful waiting for the coming of Jesus. The important feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8. (celebrating the conception of Mary in the womb of St. Anne, in contrast to the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th which celebrates the conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary.) Other feast days in December include St. Francis Xavier, Saint Nicholas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Lucy, and Saint John of the Cross.
