This Week @ SKTA! (May 4 to 8)

📅 This Week at SKTA! (May 4 – May 8)

Dear St. Kateri Families,

We have an exciting and busy week ahead as we celebrate both Catholic Education Week and Children’s Mental Health Week. Throughout the week, families will receive daily emails featuring simple activities and reflections connected to each day’s Catholic Education Week theme. We invite you to participate whenever time allows, using these moments to come together as a family in faith, reflection, and conversation.

A reminder for families of our Junior students: our Junior Concert will take place on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Families are warmly invited to attend. Siblings within the school will have the opportunity to watch the dress rehearsal earlier that morning.

We look forward to a meaningful week of celebration, learning, and community together.

Welcome to Kindergarten – May 27, 2026

On Wednesday, May 27th, we will welcome families and their children into our school for our Kindergarten Orientation Program.  Further information will be shared directly with families that have already registered with the school. Families who haven’t yet  registered their child at St. Kateri Tekakwitha CES for the Kindergarten program for the 2026-27 school year are asked to visit the school or YCDSB Admissions website.

Additional Resources for families: The Ministry of Education has made Kindergarten resources for the first day of school available in the Parent Resources section of its website. Families can access the featured books in either ePub or PDF format. An accompanying activity book is also available to download.

Please see the links below for quick access to these materials.

Celiac Awareness Day – May 16th

We would like to ask our school community to wear green to recognize Celiac Awareness Day. Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten which is found in wheat, rye, and some other foods. A person with Celiac disease who eats gluten can have different reactions, and it can result in malnutrition, anemia, and an increased risk of other autoimmune diseases. About 1 in 100-200 people have celiac disease. There is no cure for Celiac disease, and children with Celiac disease will not “grow out of it” – the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life.

School Gardens at St. Kateri

We have been working on improving the garden at the front of the school! As we continue to do so, we are inviting St. Kateri families to donate perennial plants and/or soil to help us make it even more beautiful. If you are gardening and are able to split any of your plants, please consider doing so!

We would especially appreciate hearty plants, and those with some colourful blooms (e.g. Hostas, Black-Eyed Susans, Irises, Daylilies). We would also appreciate bags of soil to add to the garden.

Any plants or soil can be left just outside the front entrance of the school any day next week.

If you are also interested in helping out with planting, please let us know by emailing marc.caruso@ycdsb.ca

🌿 Tick & Lyme Disease Awareness 🕷️

With warmer weather here, students and families are spending more time outdoors. This also means a higher chance of encountering blacklegged ticks, which can carry Lyme disease.

⚠️ Where are ticks found?
🌱 Tall grass
🌳 Bushes & shrubs
🍂 Wooded and forested areas
🚶 Trails and parks

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself
👕 Wear light-coloured clothing, long sleeves, pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes
🦟 Use insect repellent with DEET
🥾 Stay on marked paths and avoid brushing against tall grass or bushes
🚿 Shower after outdoor activities and check for ticks

🔎 Check these areas carefully:
✔️ Behind knees
✔️ Under arms
✔️ Groin area
✔️ Belly button
✔️ Scalp/headline
✔️ Back

🚨 Watch for Lyme Disease Symptoms
⭕ Red rash (sometimes “bull’s-eye” shaped)
🤒 Fever, chills, headache
💤 Fatigue or weakness
🦴 Muscle/joint pain

If you find a tick, remove it promptly and carefully. If a tick was attached for 24+ hours, contact your doctor or pharmacist within 72 hours to discuss prevention options.

🐾 Don’t forget to check children, pets, and yourself after time outdoors! Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine.
