Dear Parents and Guardians,
A heartfelt thank you to our school community for your generosity! We are thrilled to share that over 350 boxes of cereal were donated for our Lenten food drive. Our Student Council put them to good use during our Fun Friday event, and it was wonderful to see the excitement among our students.
To catch a glimpse of the fun from this past week’s event, please visit our Instagram page: [@st.katerimarkham].
Below are some details on upcoming events and activities at the school:
The Virtue of Reverence
This month we celebrate the virtues of reverence and respect. Reverence or “fear of the Lord” as it is more traditionally known, refers to the proper attitude we are meant to have toward God. Respect for all persons is another dimension of reverence. Respect literally means to see the other person with new eyes. In a sense, reverence asks us not only to respect one another, but also to have reverence for one another and God.
Equity Events
April is World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. April starts with Golden Rule Week, an interfaith celebration of the moral code found in many religions. April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day (Wear Blue Spirit Day). April 28th is the National Day of Mourning, a day established by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984 to remember and honour those who have died, been injured or suffered illness in the workplace.
Active School Travel – YCDSB
Active school travel (AST) is the use of any form of human-powered travel, such as walking or wheeling (cycling, scootering, rollerblading, skateboarding) to get to and from school. Within this definition, riding the school bus is also considered a sustainable form of transportation.
AST supports improved visibility within school zones, reduces the number of vehicles entering school zones, and enhances safety and connectivity within communities. While we understand that walking to school is not always possible we encourage you to try and incorporate it at least once a week in your routine or consider parking a few blocks away and walking the rest of the way!
AST has many known benefits. These include the following:
-
improves physical and mental health
-
reduces air pollution
-
reduces traffic congestion on site and in the community improving safety
-
promotes social development
-
increases academic performance by preparing students to learn
-
builds lifelong habits of active and independent mobility
School zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you choose to drive your child to school ensure you are following the rules of the road and increase your awareness especially within the school zone. If you walk your child or your child walks alone ensure to periodically review safe walking / cycling tips with your child.
Please read the Heading to School Brochure (next page) to learn more about the benefits of Active School Travel, safety tips and signage commonly seen near York Region Schools.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us ensure a safe school arrival and departure for our students, staff and families.
EARTH DAY – APRIL 22
We are all stewards of the Earth. It is our duty as people to be aware and ensure our day to day actions have positive impacts on the environment. One easy way to do this is by reducing the number of times your child or children are driven to and from school by using active travel, including the school bus. It takes a lot of energy (gas) to drive your vehicle, including short distances. This energy contributes to the burning of fossil fuels, which creates pollution and sends greenhouse gases into the air. These gases harm the earth’s atmosphere and contribute to pollution, smog and climate change which are all harmful to both physical and mental health.
Earth Day is an annual worldwide event and is celebrated on April 22. Earth Day is a time to reflect on your habits and consider making small changes to your routine to do your part to keep the Earth clean including using Active School Travel! For those who can’t walk or cycle to school every day, choosing active travel 2 or 3 times a week can still provide benefits. You can also consider parking a block away from the school and walking the rest of the way. Do your part, choose active school travel and help keep our Earth clean!
